About
Web Development in Kent & Sussex
I’m a Web Developer, building bespoke WordPress websites for web design agency Farlo.
I’m 26 years old and live in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. I’ve been working for a number of years on and off as a web developer, working to build on my skills and learn more about the wonderful world of the web.
My current skillset includes PHP, HTML, CSS and an ever-improving understanding of Javascript (mainly JQuery). These help me build bespoke WordPress websites for clients, either based on designs provided to me or designing/building a website from a project plan.
Outside of work I really enjoy gaming, as well as photography, and making a really good coffee!
Education & Background
I have always had a keen interest in both media and web development. Having studied both I.T and Media Studies at College – I had a good understanding of being creative with media, as well as a solid understanding of web development.
Following my studies at College, I began working at a local Web Design & Marketing Agency in Sussex as a Junior Web Developer. In this role I was responsible for minor website edits on WordPress websites, as well as working on a number of retainer clients carrying out updates, as well as email and server maintenance. Due to my creative writing skills, I was also asked to assist with a number of marketing projects involving writing blog posts and landing pages for a wide range of different clients. This was my first real taster in the world of marketing, something which I would come back to in a few years time.
After working as a Junior Web Developer for a couple of years, I made the decision to further my studies, and take a Media & Communications course at the University of Sussex. I chose the course as it provided me with a lot of the theory behind creative media, and helped me to further my understanding of how the media we consume is changing, and particularly how local news is changing due to social media.
Production Manager and Web Developer
Following on from my university studies, I was approached by a boutique Web Design Agency in Heathfield. It was here that I had the opportunity to really expand my knowledge of Online Marketing and put some of the theories I had learnt in my university degree into practice.
My first role at Sokada was working as an Online Marketing Executive, this meant that I was working for a number of clients and helping them to improve their online marketing presence. This involved writing landing pages and blog posts targeting specific search terms, as well as coordinating and organising a social media schedule across multiple channels.
One of the benefits of working in a smaller business is being able to expand your role and gain more of an understanding of what you enjoy about web design & marketing.
Organisational Skills
From the very start of my role, my organisational skills were recognised as one of my strongest assets. I was soon involved in the project management side of current website developments, making sure that each stage of the process for each project was completed on time.
I was keen to streamline the current process for website developments, making sure they were more fluid, and that all members of the team could keep track of website timelines. I used the project management monday.com to create a new way for the team to collaborate on development tasks.
The use of Monday has expanded massively, and the system is now used for almost all aspects of project management, as well as marketing project management.
Moving Back to Web Development
After working at Sokada for a year, the opportunity arose for me to be involved more in the development of smaller websites. During the Covid pandemic, our business saw an increase in smaller businesses that had a real need to have a strong foundation for their web presence.
As a result, we started offering a ‘Foundation’ website in order to help cater more for the smaller-sized business that needed help getting their name out there online.
These websites really reinvigorated my passion for web development, and I was learning much more in my new role which helped me to improve my coding skills. These smaller websites also allowed me to really help the surrounding community, particularly through some really difficult economic times during lockdown.
I was soon asked to be involved more in the bespoke projects. Compared to the foundation sites, these projects were much more complex and involved a dedicated design process. This means having to follow designs to pixel-perfect precision and working with other members of the team to refine the website to make it exactly what the client needs.
This website is a place for me to display some of my website projects. These include side projects outside of work as well as some websites that I have developed with I am particularly proud of. If you have any questions or would like a chat, please get in touch!
